Communicating Feedback Via Screencasts
Screencasting Tools: Free
Jing is a free program for your PC or Mac and is perfect for creating short videos or capturing images on your screen. Videos that are created can be uploaded to "screencast.com" for free and shared with students or embedded into other websites.
It has one or two limitations - screencasts are capped at 5 minutes, and videos can't be (easily) uploaded to other video hosting sites such as YouTube. To get started, download and install Jing, sign up for a free screencast.com account, then create, upload, and share! |
Like Jing? Screenr is similar, but doesn't need to be installed on your computer. Instead, it runs right out of your web browser. Perfect for people who move between computers often!

Screencasting Tools: Paid
Camtasia Studio is offered by the same company as Jing (Techsmith), but introduces a plethora of new features. For example, you can:
A 30-day full featured trial is available, and academic pricing makes it quite affordable for teachers. There is a great library of tutorial videos and technical support available. |
Use an iPad or Android Tablet?
Explain Everything puts all you need to create screencasts literally at your fingertips! Also with great tutorial videos, the $3.99 price tag makes it a steal! |
Beyond Augmentation: The Flipped Classroom
Screencasts have been heavily utilised in a learning methodology called "flipped learning" (Sams & Bergmann, 2010). In flipped learning, students watch videos to learn content for homework, and do consolidation activities in class with their teachers. Find out more about flipped classrooms by clicking here. You could also join the flipped learning network, or connect with other educators exploring flipped learning on Facebook or Google Plus.
